Software Installation
Installing and setting up a safe network connection is an important thing to do when hooking up your computer for the first time on campus. The Duckware CD and instructions will be in your mailbox at the beginning of fall term and at the ResNet office throughout the year.
The Duckware CD will install some essential software for safe computing at the University Of Oregon. Most importantly it will check for, and if needed, install McAfee Antiviral software. Many new PC’s come with Antivirus software already installed. However, these programs are often expiring evaluation copies that will eventually require you to pay for your antivirus coverage. The UO’s MaAfee Viruscan Enterprise is a full commercial antivirus program that does not expire. For this reason, we recommend that you uninstall the antivirus software that came with you PC and allow our Duckware to install the UO’s site license antivirus software. The Duckware CD is almost totaly automated. Follow the instructions on the screen. You will need to restart your computer after it finishes installing. After the restart of your computer run the Duckware CD again. It will allow you to install optional software.
- Optional Software included on the Duckware CD
- Firefox Alternate Web Browser (recommended)
- Thunderbird e-mail (recommended)
- Spybot anti-spyware (recommended if not running Trend Micro antiviral software)
- SSH Secure Shell File Transfer
- CISCO VPN client secure connection software
- Cute PDF writer
- Key Pass password manager
Getting an E-mail Address
The computing center automatically generates e-mail accounts for nearly all incoming students, so you may already have an account. Your duckweb account will display e-mail account information (Log on to DuckWeb, click on ‘Personal Information’ and then ‘View UO Computing Accounts Information.’ For more information on e-mail, go to the micro services web pages (http://micro.uoregon.edu/faq/email.html). The first time you visit UO's web based e-mail, you will be asked to answer a number of security questions. Web e-mail is reached by going to the UO Homepage, click and hold down on "Current Students" and choose Web E-mail (http://www.uoregon.edu/webmail/).
