Safety and Security
Family Housing and University Apartments works with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and residents to identify
and resolve security problems. Your safety and security starts with you. Make crime prevention behavior a habit and
you will create a safer environment for you and your neighbors.

- Doors that lock.
- Security services through the Department of Public Safety.
- Community Service Officers (CSOs) are students dispatched by the University's Department of Public Safety to patrol
and report criminal activity and violations of University Policy.
- Official name tags for University Housing maintenance staff and Community Assistants.
- Lighting surveys at night to assess light levels outdoors and improve lighting.
- Trimming of shrubs and trees around buildings for more visibility.
- Safety and security awareness program development with tenants.
- Opportunities for students to restrict directory information.
- Assault Prevention Shuttle (APS) is available for all students with safety concerns.
Students can get rides during limited evening hours. For reservation requests, students can call (541) 346-RIDE. All
unescorted persons who feel threatened can contact DPS for assistance.
- Trained staff at each Family Housing and University Apartment complex.
- Community Assistants (CAs) who are on-duty from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. weekdays and 24-hours a day on
weekends and holidays.
- Area Directors (ADs) who are on-duty from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

- Lock apartment or house doors at night, when asleep, or whenever out of your home.
- Travel with others when going to remote areas of your neighborhood or traveling on campus at night
- Lock vehicles at night and remove personal belongings.
- Secure personal property such as jewelry, cash, and electronic equipment. Also properly secure items stored on patios and entryways, especially bicycles.
- Register your bike through the Department of Public Safety.
- Report suspicious activity or people to Department of Public Safety (DPS): (541) 346-6666 or to Family Housing and
University Apartments immediately.
- Report crime immediately.
- Report lost keys immediately so lock changes can be made if necessary.
- Be responsible should you choose to consume alcohol.
- Know that if intoxicated, you are incapable of protecting yourself.
- Always ask who the person is before opening the door.
- Remove opportunities for crime by being informed, alert, and conscientious community members.
- Report any non-working lights around your complex to the area office.
- Read, understand, and abide by the Family Housing and University Apartments Rules and Regulations, including fire safety regulations.
- Provide input to the university about how the campus can be made safer.
- Cooperate with university and police officials who are investigating suspicious activity or criminal incidents.
- Participate in your local Tenent's Council where you can develop programs such as neighborhood watches.
