Leadership for the 21st Century

Who:

First-year students at the University of Oregon

What:

Leadership for the 21st Century is a one-credit course sponsored by University Housing, Family and Human Services, the Holden Center and the Office of Multicultural Academic Success. The course is offered during the Week of Welcome and is open to incoming first-year students. This course will provide you the unique opportunity to engage peers, student leaders, faculty and staff in a critical exploration of leadership theory and practices through keynote presentations, small group dialogue and collaborative exercises. Previous keynotes have included University President Richard Lariviere, former UO President Dave Frohnmayer, U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aiken and Kalapuya history-keeper and storyteller Esther Stutzman, and Exploring Leadership author Dr. Tim McMahon.

The class is organized into 10 cohorts (PODs) of 10-12 students. Each POD is paired with a faculty facilitator who fosters discussion and moderates the small group activities. Although the class only meets twice during the Week of Welcome, the facilitators become mentors for their POD students during their formative first term on campus, and in many cases throughout their undergraduate careers and beyond. Previous facilitators have testified to the rewarding and rich connections they forge with their POD students, and similarly, student reflection papers submitted at the end of fall term consistently acknowledge their facilitators as important figures in their transition to university life. Students also find the class serves a springboard to involvement in leadership opportunities across campus and the local community no matter what your interests or passions.

Registration for the course happens each summer at IntroDUCKtion where you register for fall courses; the Course Registration Number (CRN) for the class is 12919. Course registration is limited to the first 150 students who register, so make sure to take this information with you if you are interested! If this class is full at the time you attempt to register, please contact the instructors at L21C@uoregon.edu. Course participants who are scheduled to live in the residence halls can move in two days early on Tuesday, September 18 free of charge. If you are interested in this, you will need to send in the supplemental form for early move-in to the University Housing office. This form was included with your University Housing contract packet and can also be found on the University Housing website at: housing.uoregon.edu/forms/reshall_pre-arrival

You must complete and pass all course criteria to receive the free, early move-in accommodations. The required book for the course will be announced soon, along with guidance on how to approach engaging the text prior to class.
