This section contains documentation regarding the installation and configuration of network software and hardware for your Macintosh.
 |
 |
The hardware installation depends on the kind of adapter your computer requires. Here are the three main installation procedures:
| Length |
Price |
| 10 feet (3m) |
$8 |
| 25 feet (7.5m) |
$12 |
Plug one end of the cable into the network port on the back of your computer, and the other end into one of the orange CAT-5 UOnet Ethernet jacks on the data box.
Power off your machine, then plug the transceiver into the network port on the back of the Mac. Next, plug one end of the cable into the transceiver, and the other into one of the orange CAT-5 UOnet Ethernet jacks on the data box.
- Power off your machine and remove the cover.
- Locate the LC card slot (usually on the left side) and remove the knockout in front of the slot by squeezing the plastic tabs and removing the metal plate.
- Remove the card from its antistatic bag (be sure to first touch something metal to release any static electricity), and push the card firmly into the slot, with the metal end with the plug-in facing out the knockout.
- Close the case and reconnect cables.
- Plug one end of the patch cord into the card, and the other end into one of the CAT-5 UOnet Ethernet jacks on the data box.
If you have another model of ethernet adapter, follow the instructions that come with it.

- Put the Mac Duckware CD in your CD drive. The UO Network Applications and Antivirus Installer will automatically open. Click Continue to open the installer.
- To install the standard suite of network applications and Norton Antivirus, select the Easy Install option from the pulldown menu. This also includes the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser. If you would like to install Netscape instead of Internet Explorer, or not install a web browser at all, choose Custom Install from the pulldown menu and manually choose the files you want to install. When you have made your selection, click the Install button.
- The various installers will now open and install applications. If you are installing several different programs, there might be a few seconds between each install where the computer appears to be idle. Wait until the dialog box saying the install finished correctly appears, and click Quit.
- Open your web browser, and go to duckweb.uoregon.edu. Press the 'Click to Log On' button.
- Enter your UO ID and PAC number in the appropriate boxes and click Login. You will have to re-enter your PAC number at the next screen. Do so, and click Login again.
- When you are logged in, click the Personal Information button. At the next screen, click the View UO Computing Accounts Information link. Once you've viewed your account name and password, click the Logoff button at the top of the window.
- Before you setup an email client, you have to change your temporary password. Go to account.uoregon.edu to change passwords.
Please visit micro.uoregon.edu/email/ for all configuration questions for e-mail at University of Oregon.
Please visit account.uoregon.edu and follow the instructions on the screen
Mac Supported Hardware
Most computers purchased in the last three years already have Ethernet cards built
into them. An Ethernet port looks like a phone jack only slightly larger. You can bring your computer to room 101 of Douglass hall if you
don't have an Ethernet card installed. We will sell you the appropriate card and install it for you. There is no installation fee for
students residing in UO Housing.
All G3 and newer desktops (including iMacs, grey G4's, blue and white G3's,
G3 servers, and earlier, beige G3's) include built-in ethernet support.
All G3 and newer Powerbooks (including Titanium G4 Powerbooks) and the iBook include built-in ethernet support.

The following is a list of ethernet cards sold by ResNet. Only UO Housing residents may purchase cards from us, as we will bill purchases directly to your UO account. You will also need to purchase an ethernet cable . If you buy your card from another company, we will still install it for free if it is a supported card. We also have other models of cards available in limited amounts, at a slightly higher price, if none of the mainstream cards will work in your computer.
