Install the network card in the PC according to your computer's manual. A brief synopsis of the procedure is below:
- Shutdown and unplug your computer.
- Remove the case.
- Select a free ISA or PCI slot (depending on the card you have) and remove the metal cover beside the slot.
- Touch a metal object to discharge any static electricity.
- Press the card into the slot until it drops into place, don't be afraid to push hard.
- Use the screw removed from the metal cover to attach the card to the case.
- Replace case and reattach cables.
Laptop ethernet card installations are fairly straightforward and simple. Follow the steps below:
- Locate a free PCMCIA slot on your laptop (usually on the side, near the back)
- Insert the PCMCIA card into the slot. You can leave your computer on during this process. If the install went correctly, you should hear a two-tone beep after inserting the card.
Finally, plug one end of the patch cable into either of the databox's jacks labeled UO Ethernet and the other end into the jack on your ethernet card.

Installing and setting up a safe network connection is an important thing to do when hooking up your PC for the first time on campus. Three cds are normally used to create a safe connection to the internet. They are:
- McAfee Antivirus Installer
- Security CD
- Duckware CD
Skip this step if you already have an updated antivirus program running on your computer.
The security CD may be installed more than once without causing problems. The CD will:
- Check for some more common viruses
- Enable the firewall
- Enable Automatic updates
- Disable messenger service (does not effect instant messenger but helps stop popups)
- Disable universal plug-and-play services
- Installs Norton Antivirus 2003. Skip this step if a antivirus program is already installed.
The duckware cd will install some useful software if you run the standard install. The install will include:
- SSH secure Shell for workstations (for moving data from one computer to another)
- Alternate web browser (Mozilla)
- Spybot (an anti-spyware program)
The Duckware CD also contains a word processing program, documentation for the UO dial-in, remote access, e-mail clients, and a plethora of other programs that you might find useful. The Duckware CD does not install any software to track you in any manner.
We recommend the program Ad-Aware, available at www.download.com/ to help stop spyware.
Another popular program is Panicware, available at www.panicware.com/. This program will significantly reduce the number of pop-ups on your computer.
You may also want to try Firefox, a browser that includes pop-up blocking and the option to block
advertisements when browsing the internet.
- Open your web browser, and go to duckweb.uoregon.edu. Press the 'Click to Log On' button.
- Enter your UO ID and PAC number in the appropriate boxes and click Login. You will have to re-enter your PAC number at the next screen. Do so, and click Login again.
- When you are logged in, click the Personal Information button. At the next screen, click the View UO Computing Accounts Information link. Once you've viewed your account name and password, click the Logoff button at the top of the window.
- Before you setup an email client, you have to change your temporary password. Go to account.uoregon.edu to change passwords.
Please visit micro.uoregon.edu/email/ for all configuration questions for e-mail at University of Oregon.
Please visit account.uoregon.edu and follow the instructions on the screen
PC Supported Hardware
Most computers purchased in the last three years already have Ethernet cards built
into them. An Ethernet port looks like a phone jack only slightly larger. You can bring your computer to room 101 of Douglass hall if you
don't have an Ethernet card installed. We will sell you the appropriate card and install it for you. There is no installation fee for
students residing in UO Housing.
Because of the vast number of PC models, it would be impossible to list a card for each
specific model, so we have a guide based on processor speed only. If you have a computer
with limited expansion ability, or a non-mainstream model, stop by our office when you move
in so we can determine the proper card for your computer.

The following is a list of ethernet cards sold by ResNet. Only UO
Housing residents may purchase cards from us, as we will bill purchases directly to
your UO account. You will also need to purchase an ethernet cable . If you buy your
card from another company, we will still install it for free if it is a supported
card. We also have other models of cards available in limited amounts, at a slightly
higher price, if none of the mainstream cards will work in your computer.
