Dear University Housing Staff,

I know that the transition to a staff meal discount that covers food costs over the past year has not been easy. I want to thank everyone who came to the three informational meetings that were held in May and to those who sent emails and gave input. Finding a way to keep discounts for employees and also cover food costs and ensure that we are providing students with affordable room and board rates has been a difficult balancing act.

Beginning January 1, 2017, for University Housing employees who are not part of the SEIU (Student employees and Officers of Administration) the staff meal discount will be $3.00 for 5 points. This is to continue the transition that began in September to move all University Housing staff to the same discount level that covers the food cost portion of the meal.

In response to suggestions and concerns from University Housing employees an adjustment has been made that will allow staff to choose to spend from 1 to 5 points in a single transaction at the discount rate of $.60 per point. This adjustment was made based on feedback received to allow some flexibility in cost to staff, while still fully covering food cost.  This discount will be applied at the register as follows: 1 point = .60, 2 point = 1.20, 3 point = 1.80, 4 point = 2.40, 5 point = 3.00. Dinner at Carson Dining will also be $3.00 for staff meals.

Members of SEIU asked to discuss the amount of the classified employee discount during the upcoming collective bargaining process and we agreed to honor that request.  For the time being, SEIU members will continue to receive the meal discount they are currently receiving.

We are proud to be able to continue to offer a significant meal discount to our employees and feel it is important that employee’s food cost is not being subsidized by students living on campus.

Thank you so much for the incredible work that you do here and thank you for your patience and grace during this time of transition.

Sincerely,

Michael
