Dear University Housing Team,

Thank you so much for your discussion and input about changes to the University Housing employee meal discount. Your e-mails and attendance at the three informational meetings were incredibly helpful in our decision-making process. Your feedback reinforced the value of a meal discount for University Housing team members and departmental operations.

Members of SEIU asked to discuss the amount of the employee discount during the upcoming collective bargaining process and we agreed to honor that request. For the time being, SEIU members will continue to receive the meal discount they are currently receiving.

All University Housing employees who are not part of the SEIU (student employees and Officers of Administration) will begin migrating to a discount that covers food cost beginning on September 1, 2016. For those who are not dining services employees, the discount will change from $2 to $3 for 5 points, effective on September 1, 2016. Dining service employees will transition to a $1 for 5 points discount from September 1, to December 31, 2016, and will move to the $3 for 5 points discount effective January 1, 2017.

We are proud to be able to offer a significant meal discount to our employees, and hope to continue to be able to do so. The last time there was an adjustment in cost was 1999. Through all of our efforts at cost saving and efficiency we have been able to delay increasing the amount for over 16 years. We are really proud of that, and also incredibly proud to be have been able to provide a large meal discount option to all University Housing team members. After 16 years, the cost of food has surpassed the discount and needs to be covered so employee’s food cost is not being subsidized by students living on campus. Thank you so much for the incredible work that you do here.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you.
