Hello. I hope this message finds you doing well. I am wanting to communicate about our plans for winter term COVID-19 testing and returning to the residence halls for winter term. This week, the university communicated November break information.
Winter Residence Hall Closing and Opening, and Late Stays
As you know, residence halls close for fall term at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 11, 2020. The residence halls open Saturday, January 2, 2021. If you need or wish to stay in the residence halls anytime between December 11, 2020 and January 2, 2021 please submit a request on My Housing (end of term plans form) to be considered—please note there is an additional cost to stay over for winter break. If you are not staying in the halls during winter break, you may return on January 2, 2021 any time after 9:00 a.m. Please submit your end of term plans to indicate when you will be leaving for winter break and when you plan to return for winter term. The end of the term plans form will be available on My Housing later this week.
Before traveling for any break, we recommend you check your destination to see if there are any restrictions or requirements. Please take extra precautions and minimize your risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19. This means following the standard prevention guidelines of wearing masks, physical distancing, not gathering in groups, practicing good hygiene and symptom self-checks, and quarantine or isolation if necessary. This not only protects you; it protects the people you are traveling to visit.
Positive Case, Symptoms, or Exposure
It is essential that public health guidance be followed. Do not travel if you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and are in isolation, have experienced any COVID-19 symptoms, or have had contact with a confirmed case. If you are currently a positive COVID-19 case or in quarantine when it comes time for you to travel, please do not leave or return until you have been cleared by medical professionals. The university will not recommend or support you leaving or returning until you have been cleared by a medical professional.
We cannot emphasize enough the importance of this expectation for the entire campus community.
Returning to the Residence Halls after Winter Break and COVID-19 Testing
When you return to the residence halls after winter break, you will be permitted to enter your residence hall room, residential dining venues, and restroom facilities. All students will be tested for COVID-19 between January 2 and January 5, 2021. You will be sent an email once scheduling for the required testing is available on My Housing.
You will need to stay in your room (using restroom facilities and picking up meals from residential dining facilities) from the time you return until the time your COVID-19 results are received. Once you receive a COVID-19 testing result with no trace of COVID-19 you will be able to use all open campus and community facilities. Unfortunately, guests and family members of returning students will not be permitted to visit the residence halls.
Students who are newly moving in are permitted to have up to two guests assist with moving in on their move-in day. Guests are limited to family members for their move in. Guests are expected to follow all guidelines including wearing a mask while on campus. Guests are only permitted during the process of moving in.
While you are waiting for your January 2-5 COVID-19 test and result you will need to follow strict health and safety measures. You will be expected to stay socially distant, wash your hands regularly, wear a face covering any time you are outside your room, and continue to do your daily symptom check.
You (and your roommate) will be expected to stay in your residence hall room unless you need food, restroom facilities, medical attention, or you are leaving to take your COVID-19 test. Once you have received your negative test result you are welcome to leave your room with continued compliance with our health and safety measures. Students who test positive for COVID-19 will need to follow instructions for isolation. Students who are considered a close contact of someone who tests positive for COVID-19 will need to follow instructions to quarantine.
Dining for winter term begins one January 2, 2021. Please visit our website for hours, options, and meal point break downs.
Regular Testing During Winter Term
During winter term, all residence hall students will continue to be tested weekly (students without a roommate) or every other week (one roommate tests one week and the other roommate tests the other week). Students will be expected to continue their compliance with this measure in order to remain living on campus.
As a reminder, information about remote instruction, resources, and support is available on the UO Coronavirus website and Remote Resources for Students page. Please check your schedule to confirm if you class or labs are remote or in-person and reach out to your instructor if you have questions.
