Parents, we want the best for your student just like you do. Let’s partner to transition them to adulthood by helping them understand the consequences of their actions, empowering them to advocate for themselves, and supporting them becoming active agents of their lives. We know it’s hard and we are here to help.

FERPA Limitations
Due to protections provided by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, there are significant limitations to what can be shared about students with parents and family. Our team can answer questions about our processes, policies, and general experiences of the typical student. Our team cannot answer questions about a specific person, case, or incident. Please consult with your student directly, as we will be able to communicate with them, and they can share anything they want with you.
Per UO’s privacy policy:
The University of Oregon is committed to the privacy security of our students. Once a student has reached age 18 or is attending the university, all FERPA rights (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) belong to the student. Parent access to education records (including grades and accounts) is limited to information classified as Directory Information under the University of Oregon Student Records Policy.
We know that parents and families often contribute to their student’s success at the UO and strive to provide as much information as we can to support our students.
Parents are encouraged to read the privacy policy information provided for students.
Supporting Your Student
With FERPA protections addressed (see above), your student can allow us to communicate directly and share specific information with you. Historically, we have seen family members act as a support person alongside the student in a conduct meeting, advocate for the student in administrative matters, and contact our team to request a wellness check on a student. We are happy to work with you on these concerns and empower you to support your student.
If you are concerned about the safety and wellbeing of your student, please exhaust every opportunity to contact them directly before reaching out to our team. If you believe there is imminent danger to the physical wellbeing of the student, please contact the appropriate emergency services. If you haven’t heard from the student for a longer period than normal, a wellness check by our team may be appropriate. During business hours, you can contact the housing service center that serves the building your student lives in. The service center will work with our team to coordinate a wellness check with a level of urgency depending on the circumstances that you report. You may also contact the University of Oregon police department (UOPD) at their non-emergency phone number: 541-346-2919
